Yala National Park has one of the highest densities of leopards in the world. Block 1 alone is home to dozens of them, and our team has identified more than 40 individual leopards by their spot patterns. You can see leopards in Yala all year round, but timing makes a big difference.
Best months to visit
February to July is generally the best period. This is the dry season in the south-east of Sri Lanka. Waterholes shrink, the bush thins out, and animals gather around the remaining water. Leopards are easier to find and easier to see.
June and July are also the season when the palu trees fruit, which brings out sloth bears. This is the best time to try for both leopards and bears in one trip.
November to January is wetter and greener. The park looks beautiful and the birdlife is excellent, with many migrant species. Leopards are still seen, but the thicker vegetation can make them harder to spot.
When is Yala closed?
Block 1 of Yala usually closes for a few weeks in the driest part of the year, normally between September and October. The dates change every year, so please contact us before planning a visit in those months.
Best time of day
Leopards are most active in the cool hours.
- Morning (6:00 – 11:30): the best chance of seeing a leopard walking on the tracks or resting on a rock in the open. See our morning safari.
- Evening (14:00 – 17:30): animals become active again as the heat drops, and the light is golden. See our evening safari.
- Full day (6:00 – 18:00): you cover both active periods and stay inside while most jeeps leave at midday. See our full day safari.
Tips for a better sighting
- Book more than one safari. Every drive is different. Two or three safaris greatly improve your chances.
- Go with an experienced tracker. Knowing each leopard's territory and habits matters more than luck.
- Be patient and quiet. Some of the best moments come after waiting at a sighting for a while.
- Bring binoculars or a zoom lens. Leopards are often resting in trees or on distant rocks.
